1.2 Description: This system adopts advanced machine vision technology to perform fully automated, non-contact, online inspection of empty cans. It detects mouth deformation, dents, foreign particles on the can body, foreign matter inside the can, and under-pressurized cans.

4.1 System Overview

  • Function: Inspects empty cans for defects such as mouth deformation, tearing, V-notch edges, flaps, dents, body contamination, and internal foreign matter, and automatically rejects defective cans online.


4.2 System Principle, Process, and Installation

Working Process:

  1. A positioning sensor detects the incoming can, records its ID, and logs the encoder value through the control unit.

  2. The camera is triggered to capture the can image, which is then analyzed by the image processor. Results are sent to the HMI for live display and to the control unit for rejection decisions.

  3. The PLC receives the rejection command and signals the rejector to remove the defective can corresponding to the recorded ID.

Installation Requirements:

  • Customer must provide a 2 m straight conveyor section.

  • Cans must not be squeezed together; spacing of ~2 cm between cans is essential.

  • This condition is critical to ensure reliable inspection accuracy.

This solution adopts a single-station single-lens inspection method, the main purpose of which is to control the can mouth (strict precision), large flat cans and large foreign objects. Since the subsequent processes include hot water washing and filling with nitrogen, small foreign objects can be washed away by hot water. Therefore, the detection accuracy of small foreign objects and small deformation of the can wall will be lower.
